Darvon & Darvocet Recall – FDA Bans Darvon & Darvocet

Breaking News!

On November 19, 2010, the makers of Darvon and Darvocet announced that they would be pulling the prescription painkiller drugs from the United States market. Darvon and Darvocet were removed from the market upon request of the FDA, because of serious dangers pose by the drugs, including fatal cardiovascular side effects. If you believe that you or a loved one has suffered as a result of taking the prescription drug Darvon or Darvocet, you need a personal injury attorney on your side. Darvon (Darvon N 100 mg) also known as Darvon N 100, and Darvocet are brand name medications which contain the generic prescription pain drug propoxyphene. Darvon is marketed by the company, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc. In addition to requesting that Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals refrain from marketing Darvon and Darvocet, the FDA has also requested that the manufacturers of generic drugs containing propoxyphene refrain from marketing those painkillers as well. The FDA initiated the Darvon and Darvocet recall after it examined several clinical studies that indicated that drugs containing propoxyphene posed the risk of critical or fatal cardiovascular rhythm abnormalities. The FDA then concluded that the risks posed by Darvon, Darvocet, and other drugs containing propoxyphene, outweighed the benefits provided by such medications.

Darvon is an opioid painkiller used to treat mild to moderate pain and is typically used by patients who have undergone or are undergoing surgical procedures. Darvocet is a more potent narcotic, which consists of propoxyphene combined with acetaminophen, and is also used to reduce pain. In 2004 Darvon was the 12th most prescribed drug despite the fact that reportedly 10,000 deaths have resulted from the use of Darvon and Darvocet.

Propoxyphene has been prescribed as a painkiller in the U.S. since 1957 and its side effects have been questioned numerous times before. In 1978 and again in 2009, the FDA looked into dangerous side effects associated with Propoxyphene, but took no action in terms of a recommending that its use be discontinued. This inaction is questionable, particularly in light of the fact that Britain pulled the drug from the market six years ago, and the rest of Europe over a year ago.

DANGEROUS SIDE EFFECTS OF PROPOXYPHENE USE INCLUDE:

  • Abnormal Heart Rate or Rhythm
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Fainting
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Death
  • Suicide
  • Cardiovascular Emergency
  • Overdose

PLEASE SPEAK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE DISCONTINUING THE USE OF DARVON OR ANY OTHER PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.
